Linking of Emission Trading Systems of European Union and Switzerland
Friday, 18. September, 2020
The Slovak National Administrator informs the participants in the European Trading System about the linking of Emission Trading Systems of European Union and Switzerland which will be operational as from 21 September 2020. From this date account holders will be allowed to hold Swiss emission allowances on their accounts, transfer and receive allowances from Swiss registry and use Swiss emission allowances for compliance under EU ETS.
Following the entry into force of the Agreement between the EU and Switzerland, the emission allowances of both systems became mutually acceptable for compliance purposes. In order to enable transfers of emission allowances between the two systems, it is necessary to establish an electronic link between the registries. Since the registries are still not connected by a permanent direct link, provisional solution of transfers being performed on certain predefined dates was agreed. Initiated transactions will be executed on the next date indicated in the schedule below in accordance with the rules applicable in respective system (26 hours delay in the Union registry, 24 hours delay in the registry of the ETS of Switzerland).
Dates for the execution of transfers between the registries in 2020:
The calendar with dates for the execution of transfers covering the entirety of 2021 will be published at the end of November 2020. Any changes to the calendar will also be published well in advance. More information can be found in the notice by the European Commission.
